In this video, Melanie portrays a young child who grows more and more restless as she talks about this guy. "This guy" is the kind of guy that thinks he is better than her (everyone knows one of those). She sings, "I know my ABCs, yet you keep teaching me/I say, fuck your degree, alphabet boy/You think you're smarter than me with all your bad poetry/Fuck your ABCs, alphabet boy."
At first, baby Melanie just sits and pouts about this boy, but then starts to grow rowdy and takes out a plastic pistol, and eventually a knife. If you're a fan of Melanie Martinez's work, you will like "Alphabet Boy". It fits in perfectly with the aesthetic and story of Cry Baby. I admire Melanie because she is more than a singer, she is an artist. Not only does she write and sing her own songs, but she conceives and directs her own videos too. Her album is more than just music, it is also a story; Melanie tells it well.
"Alphabet Boy" is off Melanie Martinez's debut album Cry Baby with was released in August 2015 through Atlantic Records. It reached #1 on the US Billboard Top Alternative Albums. It is available on iTunes and Spotify. Melanie will be playing the WSPK K-Fest in New York in June. Bebe Rexha, Mike Posner, and Nathan Sykes will also be performing.
