The video starts with normal people: white, black, Native American, gay, straight, tatted, old, and young. They start telling their stories. One had an abusive stepfather, another overcame multiple forms of cancer. They share their struggles with self-acceptance. "Age catches up to you." "They told me I'm going nowhere." Their words echo through your mind. Then John takes his place at the mic.
The band plays, dressed in spiffy blue suits. They're shown next to the storytellers, prepping for the camera. They start timid and stiff, but they grow happy and silly. They start dancing around and having a good time. The people also start joining in. As the song concludes, the people smile and say, "I am beautiful."
John left an accompanying message to fans on Facebook: "You are not beautiful because of the symmetry in the little squares on your telephone, you are beautiful because "you" are the only "you" this place will ever know." The Maine is so nice, the truly love and appreciate all of their fans.
"Am I Pretty" is off The Maine's fifth studio album American Candy. The album reached #3 on the US Billboard Independent Albums. It is available for purchase on iTunes for streaming on Spotify. The Maine is currently finishing up The American Lines tour with Mayday Parade and The Technicolors. Then they'll be going on the Vans Warped Tour.
