Melanie Martinez is a very visual artist, from her colorful makeup to her concerts (she'll be in DC on the 28th, but it's already sold out). The video is conceived and directed herself, so we know it's authentically Melanie. The video starts with a woman giving birth. The doctor wears a rabbit mask and bashes the woman's stomach until candy falls out. Then the cry baby character is born. The woman then smokes a cigarette, repulsed by the baby's crying.
Melanie then takes the place of the baby. The nursery is all pastel blues and pinks. But it's not all cute and cuddly. Melanie's stuffed animals attack, her tears flood the room, and she plays with block letters "F", "U", "C", and "K." She cries, "Your heart's too big for your body/It's why you won't fit inside/You pour it out/Where everyone can see." It's all very Tumblr-esque, all very Melanie Martinez. It's another beautiful visual work from Cry Baby, which also includes videos for "Pity Party", "Soap", "Dollhouse", "Carousel", and "Sippy Cup."
"Cry Baby" is the title song of Melanie Martinez's debut album Cry Baby, released through Atlantic Records. It reached number one on the US Top Alternative Albums and number 6 on the US Billboard 200. It is available on iTunes and Spotify. Melanie Martinez is currently touring the US on The Cry Baby Tour.
