There are endless examples of why "Now You Know" is a great feminist anthem: "The scene is so sexist, believe me I get it, we'd probably sell more records if I flaunted my ass and chest but/forget it", "And just once, I'd like to see some other bands resonate go out of their way to say they're fronted by a male", "And while we're on it, let me say/women don't all sound the same", and that's only the first verse!
The video complements the song so well. It opens with the juxtaposition between Ariel and her "icon warriors" and a bunch of little girls playing with dolls at a slumber party. One girl looks out of place in the whole stereotypical situation. The icon crew picks her up, go on the road, and end up smashing "girl toys", like a pink shopping cart, pink barbie car, and a pink kitchen set. Smashing gender roles and kicking ass.
"Now You Know" is a single Icon For Hire released last June. It is available on iTunes and Spotify. Check out Ariel's YouTube channel: The REL show for some super cool content from the band's lead singer.
